Tips for Taking Commissions
Commissions Week
So you've decided you want to start taking commissions. It's a big step, and it can be nerve-wracking for some. I'd like to share with you some tips I've been learning over time!
How do I get myself out there?
This part is one of the most important, and one of the hardest. Trying to get yourself enough of a following in order to take commissions can be tricky. Therefore, I have a few recommendations:
Join and submit to groups. You may need to join a lot of groups. Submitting to only a few won't be too helpful. Find multiple groups that apply to your interests - maybe you draw a lot of original characters. Search for groups d

Trad art week: Tools of your trade
Hello and welcome to the first article in projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate)'s Traditional art: Tools of your trade week! I'm BeckyKidus (https://www.deviantart.com/beckykidus), and I'm here to tell you about one of the more unusual traditional art tools: namely scratchboard, also known as scraperboard.
What is scratchboard?
Many of you might not have heard about this medium before. So, what exactly is this medium? To quote wikipedia:
is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard refers to both a fine-art medium, and an illustrative technique using sharp knives and tools for engra

Lighting In Art Week
In this article, I will be sharing some tips on how to shade in a particularly mean technique, which is watercolor. Main difference between watercolor and other traditional painting techniques is about how to achieve light and shadow - which is why I decided to include this topic into a wonderful LIGHTING IN ART WEEK at projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate) And they let me!
How is watercolor different from other traditional art painting techniques then?
Acrylic, oil painting, even gouache are opaque techniques, allowing you to add white into your painting as you please, whenever you need to. Watercolor doesn't use white paint at all, it's
What is Stippling?
Stippling is the creation of a pattern, representing various levels of opacity, through the use of dots of different sizes. The spacing and density of the dots will illustrate such opacity levels. These various opacity levels are used to create shading in illustrations:
But how did it all start, and who invented this technique?
In the 1500’s, an Italian engraver named Giulio Campagnola (father of artist Domenico Campagnola), invented the “Stippling Technique”
The technique originally involved engraving with dots or little flicks of the burin (which is a steel cutting tool used by engravers), instead of
Pixel Art week
Creating a cohesive color scheme is a constant struggle in any figurative art form, however, in pixel art, it is distilled to an extreme.
In this article I will show you a method of constructing a limited palette for a fairly complex semi-realistic scene. As an example, I will use my old piece 'The Raven' (below). This method can be applied further to create an even more restricted palette for smaller stuff like sprites.
Before you start
First thing to decide is the lighting for your scene: what is the light source, where is it located, is it warm or cool, is the light diffuse or focused, are there multiple light sources? Ide
Traditional Art Week
Another year has passed and I am thrilled to be able to join Traditional Art Week at projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate), again. My last article was about wet-in-wet watercoloring techniques and you can find it HERE, in this one I will explore watercolor effects. Hopefully, it will inspire you to have a bit of fun with watercolor and take your painting to the next level
What exactly do you mean by "watercolor effects"?
Watercolor effect happens when pigment is not distributed on a page / paper evenly, but is rather being disturbed and creates a splash. Oftentimes these splashes happen to you unintentionally, especially when you are still l
